Garden Birds

Now’s a great time to feed the birds as there isn’t much food around.

If you have a pond/bird bath a good idea is to float a tennis ball or equivalent in it this stops it freezing in cold weather.

Food with fat in is good as the fat in them will keep the birds warm over winter. Lard with bird seed pushed in is a great bird-y treat and really fun to make (learn how to make them at the bottom of the page).  Another good energy food for birds is sunflower seeds and unsalted peanuts. Some left overs from the kitchen are great including cheese, pastry, apples, pears and raisins.  If you want to see more robins in your garden try putting some meal worm out.

A window bird feeder is a brilliant idea if you want to get up close and personal with the birds that visit your garden. I found with my window bird feeder that the birds were to scared to come to it so to get them to come over I laminated some leaves and stuck it in front of the feeder, this gave the birds confidence to come and eat from it a year later I took it down and they happily came and went just as if the leaves were still up.
